Matthew Johnson

Matthew Johnson

Matthew read law at the University of Kent, graduating in 2009, and went on to complete the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in London with a Distinction in 2011. Prior to joining Palmers Solicitors, Matthew spent a year working in the personal insolvency department of an insolvency practitioner’s firm, dealing primarily with bankruptcy cases.

Matthew joined Palmers Solicitors as a trainee in 2012 and upon qualification as a Solicitor in September 2014 has continued in our Company Commercial Department. In February 2023, he was promoted to become Departmental Director. Matthew regularly advises and represents clients on a broad range of commercial and corporate issues with particular emphasis upon:

  • corporate finance
  • commercial law matters
  • contracts
  • terms of business
  • shareholder agreements
  • business sales and acquisitions
  • intellectual property
  • business law
  • independent legal advice on personal guarantees

In his spare time, when he is not in the stands passionately supporting West Ham United FC, Matthew is a keen footballer and golfer.

Louise Welch

Louise Welch

Louise has worked at various law firms since 2007. She attained a 2.1 LLB Law and Human Rights degree, qualifying in November of 2009. She has also completed the STEP Diploma in Estates and Trusts (England & Wales).

Her last job was in a senior position as head of Wills and probate.

Louise joined Palmers in July 2022 as a solicitor and was promoted to an Associate Solicitor in August 2023. Louise specialises in wills, probate, lasting powers of attorney and Court of Protection applications.

She enjoys meeting the public and helping them through difficult times, which often means problem-solving to meet the clients’ objectives. She achieves this through empathy and patience, attention to detail and treating all clients with respect. Her strengths are prioritising urgent matters and dealing with them in a timely manner.

Away from the office Louise is a keen cinemagoer, she loves socialising with friends and family and when feeling more active enjoys a game of badminton.

Louise is a Dementia Friend and Mental Health First Aider (MHFA).

Patricia Wollington

Patricia Wollington

Initially qualifying as a solicitor in August 2002, Patricia is an experienced litigator with expertise in both civil and commercial litigation.

Primarily focused on commercial litigation in her current role, Patricia has worked on a range of complex matters and dealt with cases for several different organisations, including working in-house for Consumer Champion and Charity – Which?

She enjoys that no two cases are the same, which makes her adaptable to finding the outcome that is right for each particular client.

Using her considerable problem-solving skills, she is committed and dedicated to finding the most cost-effective solutions.

Although she primarily assists clients with litigation, Patricia is also an advocate for alternative dispute resolution and has helped several clients resolve matters outside of the courts.

She advises on all types of civil and commercial related disputes, including:

  • Commercial contract disputes
  • Negligence disputes
  • Breach of contract and misrepresentation
  • Debt recovery and enforcement
  • Insolvency-related enforcement work
  • Shareholder and director disputes
  • Warranty claims
  • Charity litigation
  • Property and boundary disputes
  • Neighbour disputes, including nuisance and trespass

When not at work, Patricia enjoys going to the theatre, travelling and spending time with her family and dog Lottie

She also enjoys taking part in various social activities, such as mini-golf and tree top challenges but more recently she has discovered ‘escape and panic rooms’ and this has become her secret obsession.

Venessa Appiah-Nuamah

Venessa Appiah-Nuamah

Venessa is a Solicitor in our Family team, having completed her training contract with us in 2024.

Always keen to learn and expand her expertise, she has extensive knowledge of family law and litigation, employing a structured approach to her work with great attention to detail, excellent communication and organisation skills.

Outside of work, she enjoys playing badminton and trying out different sporting activities.

Layla Clark

Layla Clark

Layla has focused on conveyancing work since joining the practice in 2012. She has worked as a paralegal since 2014 in our residential property department at our Thurrock office.

She assists Brooke Barnes, our conveyancing executive, specialising in residential property, dealing with the selling of houses and flats, transfer of ownerships and re-mortgages for clients.

In her spare time, Layla enjoys music and spending time with friends and family.

Kimberley Portas-Bailey

Kimberley Portas-Bailey

Kimberley started at Palmers in 2003 and since then Kim has successfully fulfilled a variety of roles; commencing as a trainee legal secretary before becoming front line legal support.  She moved on to become the Systems, Marketing and Communications Facilitator before being appointed to her present role as Project Manager for Palmers.

Her role involves planning and developing project ideas, creating and leading a team and monitoring the progress of projects, while solving issues as they arise. This involves plenty of planning and the use of spreadsheets

She enjoys the fact that no day is ever the same, is a team player and is not afraid to roll her sleeves up and muck in – evidenced by her recent qualification as a Mental Health First Aider (MHFA).

In her spare time, she loves walking, running and fishing, while not forgetting to spend time with friends and family.
