Singer Cheryl says no to prenup

Singer Cheryl Cole has been hitting the headlines with reports of her surprise second marriage.

The former Girls Aloud star and X Factor judge announced earlier this month that she had married French restaurateur Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini on 7 July.

It has since been widely reported that the singer, said to have amassed a fortune of some £16 million, refused to sign a prenuptial agreement. Mr Fernandez-Versini is said to be independently wealthy.

She also chose not to put a prenup in place when she married ex-England footballer Ashley Cole in 2006, saying at the time: “We’re getting married because we’re committing ourselves to each other to spend the rest of our lives together.

“I could understand if you’re 93 and you’ve got billions of pounds and this 24-year-old wants to marry you in a month. But we’re a work in progress, we’re going to build our married life together, not thinking about if it ever ends.”

Surjit Verdi, said: “Couples with substantial wealth and a similar level of assets may not feel it necessary to have a prenup.

“However, while the decision on whether to have a prenup is an individual one for each couple, there are circumstances where a prenup warrants serious consideration and a second marriage is certainly one of these.

“Couples marrying or entering a civil partnership for a second time are likely to be older and have assets that they may want to protect for themselves or for children from a previous relationship in the event of a future divorce.

“Moves are under way to give legal force to prenups and while that process continues, expert, independent legal advice from a family law specialist can help to clarify the issues and is an essential step if the decision is made to put a prenup in place.
