A campaign that encourages cleaners to know their rights at work has been launched by an industry-led taskforce.
The multi-agency body – including trade unions and businesses – was set up following the publication of a study on employment practices in the sector.
The report found some employers did not provide staff with contracts. Others failed to pay their employees in full or honour holiday leave entitlements. Many cleaners reported that they were effectively ‘invisible’ and did not understand their rights.
In response, the taskforce is focusing on projects to address workers’ difficulties.
The British Cleaning Council (BCC) is a taskforce member. Chairman Simon Hollingbery said: “We’d like to encourage all cleaning contractors to use their influence to promote fairness, dignity and respect for cleaning operatives in all corners of our industry.
“The campaign fits well with the BCC’s core ideals of dignity and fairness in work and we very much want to work with businesses as it’s in their best interests to look after employees, as all the evidence suggests that if they do, they’ll have a happier and more productive workforce.”
Examples of good practice in the report include efforts to promote equality and boost workforce development, leading to greater job stability.
