The event, which raised almost £3,000 for charity, featured an empowering panel of female speakers, each with their own remarkable story of resilience and success.

Among them was Natalie Robinson, a Lady McAdden Charity Champion and breast cancer survivor, who delivered a powerful message on the importance of awareness and early detection.

Representing the practice were Helen Jago, Sarah Dowie, Erin Cronin, and Layna Thompson, who joined local businesswomen and community leaders in celebrating female empowerment and fundraising for a vital cause.

Reflecting on the event, Layna Thompson, said: “Hearing the journeys of these incredible women was not only inspiring – it was a reminder of the strength and resilience that exists in our community.

Palmers Solicitors is proud to appoint Brooke Barnes as Head of Branch at the Thurrock office, reaffirming its commitment to recognising and nurturing exceptional talent within the firm.

Brooke, a highly regarded Legal Executive, has been an integral part of the Property and Conveyancing team based in Thurrock.

Following her promotion to Senior Associate in February 2023, she now steps into a new role as Head of Branch from March 2025.

In this leadership position, she will manage the office’s day-to-day operations and continue overseeing the Thurrock Residential Property Team, ensuring excellence in service and efficiency.

With nearly two decades of experience in property law, Brooke brings extensive knowledge and expertise to her role, specialising in residential property matters, including house and flat sales, transfers of ownership, and re-mortgages.

Clients value her friendly, reliable, and practical approach, which has cemented her reputation for excellence in the field and is part of the reason she was put forward for this promotion.

Palmers Solicitors, a leading law firm in Essex, is excited to announce its continued support as a sponsor of the South Woodham Ferrers Rotary Swimarathon.

Now in its 21st year, the Swimarathon has become a local favourite, uniting teams of swimmers for a fun and energetic relay event.

This year, the Rotary Club has chosen to support two remarkable causes, Cancer Research UK and Open Road, ensuring that all funds raised go directly to these vital charities.

Teams of up to six swimmers will take part in a 40-minute relay swim, followed by 5 minutes of “mayhem,” where all participants swim together for the finale.

Kimberley Portas-Bailey, Project Manager at Palmers Solicitors, said: “We’re really proud to be sponsoring the Swimarathon again this year. It’s always such a fun and lively event, and it’s great to see our local community come together to support such worthy causes.

New open reporting provisions have been introduced in family courts across England and Wales, effective from Monday 27 January 2025.

Palmers Solicitors, a respected law firm based in Essex, offers expert commentary on the potential impact these changes will have on the family justice system.

The new provisions allow journalists and legal bloggers to attend family court hearings and report on what they observe, provided a transparency order is granted.

These reforms aim to improve transparency and build public trust in the family justice system.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential consequences for vulnerable families and children.

Karen Bishop, Head of Family Law at Palmers Solicitors, explained:

“While we recognise the importance of transparency and the potential for these provisions to build public trust in the family justice system, we must also consider the emotional and practical impact on the families involved.”

A key concern is the risk of unintentional identification or “jigsaw identification,” where certain details may inadvertently reveal the identity of children.

“For children who have already experienced distressing situations, such as abuse, neglect, or parental separation, the reality of their case being reported in the media must be carefully considered,” said Karen.

“It’s crucial that appropriate support and guidance are in place for children who may later read about their own case as adults.”

These reforms build on the success of the Family Court Reporting Pilot, launched in 2023, which reported no breaches of confidentiality but highlighted concerns about limited media resources.

The new provisions also aim to hold decision-makers accountable and improve the consistency and quality of decision-making in the family justice system.

“Securing the best outcomes for children and their families means ensuring decisions in family courts are fair, consistent, and based on the best available information,” said Karen.

“The scrutiny that comes with media reporting may drive up standards and improve accountability by exposing weaknesses, highlighting successes, and encouraging greater consistency in decision-making.”

“We have already seen instances of how reporting under the pilot has raised awareness of key issues in the family justice system and led to positive changes. The hope is that this momentum will continue with the full rollout of the provisions.”

As the open reporting provisions are rolled out across family courts in England and Wales, Palmers Solicitors remains committed to supporting families.
