The UK reopens resettlement routes in partnership with the UN: How can a private solicitor support you?

In a recent press conference, Sarah Mahmood announced that the UK are to re-open resettlement routes in partnership with the United Nations Refugee Assistance Project and the International Refugee Assistance Project after their suspension in previous years.

It was announced that a quarter of all referrals will be Afghan women and girls and Palestinian refugees fleeing war and persecution.

What will the resettlement programme entail?

From October, charities and non-profit organisations will be able to apply to become sponsors for a community sponsorship route which will allow communities to host refugees.

Additionally, a student sponsorship route will open up, allowing universities to host refugee students.

From spring 2027, refugees will also be allowed to submit applications for a work sponsorship route, which will see companies host refugees.

All sponsors must provide accommodation, integration support and help with finding work to remove pressure from local authorities.

People who arrive in the UK by these routes will be placed on a five-year path to permanent settlement.

The scheme aims to reduce the number of unsafe small boat crossings in favour of encouraging capped, safe and legal routes instead.

How can a private solicitor support refugee resettlement?

Once refugees have arrived in the UK, they will need the support of a solicitor to help them understand the complex legal system.

A private solicitor can help to prepare clients for interviews with the Home Office, draft legal statements and build foundational protection cases.

Then, after completing five years with the status of a refugee, an immigration solicitor can assist with applications for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

This is beneficial as it allows identity to be proven accurately and ensures that records have continuity.

Solicitors can also support with family reunion. They can support applications to safely bring dependent partners and children to the UK to join a recognised refugee.

Additionally, should a claim or support payment be refused, solicitors are able to file appeals at immigration tribunals and can challenge unlawful government reviews by judicial review.
