If you are thinking about remaining in the UK to look for work post-graduation in 2027, be aware that graduate visa rules are changing.
According to data published by the ONS two-thirds of overseas graduates stay in the UK post-graduation. These changes to visas threaten to push skilled workers out of the UK as jobs become harder to secure.
What is a graduate visa?
Graduate visas allow international students to remain in a country after completing their degree to work or look for employment.
In the UK, the Graduate Route enables eligible students, who have successfully completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, to stay for at least two years (or three years for PhD graduates).
This visa does not require a job offer, giving graduates flexibility to explore different career opportunities or gain relevant work experience.
Applicants must have studied at a recognised institution and hold a valid Student visa at the time of application.
The process is completed online, and applicants must pay a visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Importantly, the Graduate visa is unsponsored, meaning individuals can switch jobs, be self-employed, or remain unemployed without breaching visa conditions.
However, the visa is temporary and cannot be extended. Graduates who wish to remain in the UK long-term typically need to transition to another visa category, such as the Skilled Worker visa, which requires employer sponsorship.
Overall, graduate visas are designed to attract international talent, support the workforce, and enhance students’ post-study career prospects.
What are the changes?
For those with Student Visas in the UK who have successfully graduated from an undergraduate or master’s degree, from 1 January 2027, most UK graduate Visas will shorten from 24 months to 18 months.
This only applies to applications that are sent after the 1 January deadline.
What happens if you cannot find an employer to sponsor you?
While the Graduate visa provides valuable time to gain work experience and search for employment, not all graduates will secure a role with an employer licensed to sponsor Skilled Worker visas before their visa expires.
If you do not find a sponsoring employer, your options may be limited. In many cases, you will be required to leave the UK when your Graduate visa comes to an end.
However, depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible to switch into another immigration route before your visa expires.
This could include further study, family-based visas, business or innovation routes or other categories for which you meet the eligibility requirements.
