Legal eagles are turning to ping pong to boost their workplace well-being.
The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx), the awarding body and professional association for lawyers and legal professionals, has teamed up with Table Tennis England to launch the initiative.
CILEx chief executive Mandie Lavin said on 14 August: “We believe that offering our employees something fun and active to do during their breaks will benefit both the individual and the business down the line. We look forward to running regular competitions and events to get everyone involved.”
Julie Snowdon, marketing and media officer for Table Tennis England, said: “A table tennis table has a wonderful knack of bringing teams together, breaking down departmental barriers and encouraging interaction amongst workers who otherwise wouldn’t have contact with each other.
“Ping pong is also a great stress buster; and unlike most other physical activities, a game of table tennis requires no change of clothes. So after a lunchtime game staff are ready for the afternoon revitalised and buzzing.”
Palmers’ Employment Law specialist Lara Murray said: “Installing a table tennis table won’t be right for every employer but this simple and low-cost initiative does provide useful food for thought about ways that businesses can help to look after their people’s health and well-being.
“Employers have duties under health and safety legislation to assess risks from work-related stress and take steps to control these and under common law to take reasonable care to ensure the health and safety of workers.
“Our team can provide expert advice to employers on actions they need to take to safeguard their employees from stress, including carrying out stress risk assessments to identify appropriate measures to mitigate and manage risk. For more information, please contact us.”
