DfE publishes guidelines for MAT good practice and growth

The DfE has published new guidelines aimed at helping multi-academy trusts (MATs) to grow and achieve good practice.

The guide sets out ‘design principles’ for any school that is considering joining or becoming a MAT, as well as existing MATs that are considering expansion.

Helpful advice includes establishing new trusts, growth planning for existing trusts, as well as examples of good practice.

The guide explains the criteria used by Regional School Commissioners (RSCs) when assessing the capacity of MATs at each stage of their development. It also includes a framework which is designed to assist trusts learn from others at all stages of their development.

The new guidelines, which it is hoped will leader greater to consistency across the country, sets out the DfE’s official position on the characteristics successful academy trusts should possess, along with the barriers that they will need to overcome in order to secure their ongoing success.

BJ Chong, a Partner with Palmers, explained: “A key aspect of growing a MAT is due diligence. Trustees and CEOs need to be fully aware of any potential issues which may make for a less than harmonious partnership.

“Although due diligence can be a lengthy, it is critical to ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises which could jeopardise the success and reputation of the MAT.”
